Creative Practice

Earth to Earth, Breath by Breath

  • To celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, visit a place outdoors that helps you to feel spiritually connected to the natural world.

  • Thank this place for welcoming you.

  • Remove your shoes and socks, and step onto the ground with bare feet.

  • Feel your deep connection with Mother Earth.

  • Raise your arms above your head, and reach out with open fingers.

  • Feel your deep connection with Father Sky.

  • Experience the rise and fall of the breath inside you.

  • Feel your deep connection with Sister Wind.

  • Notice the heat and hue of the light around you.

  • Feel your deep connection with Brother Sun.

  • Let your heartbeat come into rhythm with the wildlife chorus.

  • Feel your deep connection with every living being.

  • Bow in reverence, belonging, and gratitude.

Journal Reflection

Sacred Nature

  • When I pause and bring gentle care to my inner life, what memory of a spiritual experience in nature comes into my awareness?

  • What happened during this experience?

  • What did I feel during this experience?

  • What surprised me about this experience, if anything?

  • What did this experience change, if anything?

  • What do I wonder now?

Contemplative Resource

Wander in Wonder

Renew your connection with the Earth, guided by this free walking meditation.

A wood drake glides through still water.

“When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children’s lives may be,

I go and lie down where the wood drake

rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with forethought

of grief. I come into the presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.”
